RECAP: Strong third quarter not enough as Heat unable to top Cascades

ABBOTSFORD, B.C. – A strong third quarter from the Heat would not be enough on Friday night as they fell to the UFV Cascades in the season opener for the team from the lower mainland.

UFV would score the first 11 points of the final frame and the Heat were never able to get the deficit under eight for the rest of the game.

Parm and Sukhjot Bains would combine for 54 points on the night, including going 12-of-19 from deep. This also featured Parm Bains making five threes in the fourth quarter alone.

Spencer Thomas led the way for the UBCO attack on Friday night, racking up 16 points for the Heat while Philip Okanlawon (12 points) and Sebago Jean-Charles (10 points) also finished in double-figures.

As a team, the Heat would shoot just 39% on the night, compared to nearly 49% from the home squad. This included a season-high 58% from behind-the-arc from the Cascades as well thanks to the shooting of the Bains combo.

"I think we got a little complacent," UBCO head coach Clay Pottinger said. "We allowed them to make some shots, and this is definitely not a team where you want to allow them to get hot.

"We did a good job, I thought, through almost three quarters getting out on three-point shots and not allowing them anything easy. Then as soon as we got a 10-point lead, we got complacent. The biggest part of the learning curve with a new group of guys together is trying to figure out how to be successful."

"We got rolling, and we just kind of stayed in that rhythm for the remainder of the game," UFV head coach Adam Friesen said, reflecting on an incendiary 11-minute stretch bridging the third and fourth quarters which saw Parm and Sukhjot combine for nine triples.

"UBC Okanagan played really hard. They made us earn it. We shouldn't be expecting to get many wins having to dig ourselves out of deficits this late in the second half."

The loss drops UBCO to (1-4) early in the season while the Cascades pick up their first win of their Canada West campaign (1-2).

The two teams will matchup once again tomorrow night in Abbotsford, with tip-off slated for 7 p.m. PST.
