RECAP: Heat blanked by Bisons

Kelowna B.C. – The UBC Okanagan women's soccer team fell (1-0) to the University of Manitoba as the Bisons' Bruna Mavignier marker in the 58th minute was the lone goal in the match on the Nonis Field on Saturday afternoon. 

The loss at home to the Bisons drops the Heat into seventh spot in the Pacific division, just one spot out of the playoffs with three matches to play with a (2-7-2) record.   

After today's win, the Manitoba Bisons remain tied for third place at (5-4-2) in the Prairie division tied up with Mount Royal. 

A much more aggressive UBCO side then in recent weeks pushed the play in tot eh Manitoba end for solid portions art a time but unfortunately the Heat were unable to find an extra bit of luck and the back of the net. 

On Saturday the Heat outshot the Bisons 11-10 and forced the Herds keeper Madison Wilford to make four stops, including a brilliantly timed push of a long strike over the cross bar, for the shutout. 

Emma Terrillon, with her second straight start, made five saves in the loss. 

Up next: 

Both teams have three remaining games. The Heat are facing the Winnipeg Wesman tomorrow, Sunday, at 1 p.m. The Manitoba Bisons are playing Thompson Rivers in their next game on Sunday, in Kamloops at 1 p.m. For UBCO the Sunday match against Winnpeg will be their final home match on the year and with that the university will celebrate their four players moving on prior to the 1 p.m. start time. Lindsey Berthelsen, Emma Berwick, Jasmine Cooper, and Ally Ferranoto will all graduate this spring from UBC Okanagan. 

First Half: 

In the early start of the game, Mackenzie Pfoh, in the fourth minute, had a great scoring opportunity after intercepting the ball next to the box in Bisons' territory, but she missed the net by inches. 

In the 26th minute, the Heat's rookie forward, Jessica Ambrosio on the corner sent a pass from to Lindsey Berthelsen who received the pass in penalty area, and her finishing attempt went wide. 

Later in the 39th minute, Jillian Hunt received a sharp pass in the penalty area from graduating forward Jasmine Cooper, who had penetrated deep down the right side.  Hunt went for a kick but overshot as the ball flew above the net.

The Bisons worked for two straight corners late in the first half but neither yielded a shot. 

Second Half:

The game winning goal, in the 58th minute was a heads up play by Bruna Mavignier, as she intercepted the Heat's backline pass and drove into the penalty zone, finishing into the top left corner of the net. It was her fourth goal of the season. 

In the 52nd minute, UBCO nearly got on the board first as Cooper's continuous effort driving down the right side, eventually created space for Ambrosio, who attempted a shot in the penalty area that would miss its mark. 

Wilford's toughest save on the day was in the 88th minute when second year Heat midfielder, Erica Lampert, had the ball roll to her 25 yards out in the center of the park. The Kelowna Secondary product stepped into the shot forcing Wilford to push the ball over the cross bar.
