KELOWNA, B.C. - Emily Cornwall of the UBC Okanagan Heat women's golf team will don the red and white of Team Canada next week as she is set to compete in the 2022 FISU World University Golf Championships in Turin, Italy from July 20-23.

Cornwall, who is the youngest athlete on the Canadian squad, will be representing Canada alongside Élizabeth Blier and Sasha Laoun of the University of Montréal, as well as Charles-David Trépanier of the University of Laval, Jacob Armstrong, and Jackson Jacob of the University of Fraser Valley on the men's side. Each day's top two scores will be counted towards Team Canada's scoring for the men's and women's teams respectively.

"I am very proud of this accomplishment for Emily," commented Heat head coach Clay Stothers on Emily's selection. "She has come a long way in her first year which is very exciting for her future. An event of this magnitude will teach her so much and just make her a better player in the future. For someone from our program to be selected is a real honor and shows the difference in our program and the direction we are going."

The first-year fine arts student ended her rookie season on a high note, finishing as the Heat's top golfer in the 2022 Golf Canada Canadian University/College Championship, presented by BDO. Cornwall finished the tournament in a tie for 11th in the individual standings at 30-over par 318, helping to propel the UBCO squad to a bronze medal finish.

Earlier in the season, she finished T-9th at the Canada West Championships, leading the Heat to a silver medal performance.

"I am extremely excited to be able to play in such a large event, and very grateful to everyone who has helped me get to this point," said Cornwall, a native of Calgary, on competing on the world stage. "It wouldn't have been possible without the help and support from my friends & family, Clay Stothers, Jeff Pain, and UBCO Athletics. I am extremely proud of myself for putting in the work, time, and effort to be able to qualify for such a large-scale event. To be playing for team Canada is a dream come true and couldn't be more excited to compete, and I hope I can make our beautiful country proud."
