QUEBEC CITY – UBC Okanagan men's cross country athlete Connor Baerg posted the best-ever finish for a Heat runner at the U SPORTS Championships, hosted by the Laval Rouge et Or, this past Saturday as he finished 60th at the Plains of Abraham course.

Baerg, a native of Burlington, Ont., who was competing at his first U SPORTS championship, crossed the finish line in a time of 26 minutes, 28.2 seconds to finish in the top half of the 130 athlete field.

His performance topped the previous best result by a Heat runner which was a 74th place showing by Michael Mitchell at the 2019 U SPORTS Championships in Kingston, Ont.

"I think it was the hardest I could have went given the circumstances," said Baerg following the race. "It was a pretty deep field and a tough course so I really couldn't have asked for anything better. I think I had a good lead on some of the guys that I'm normally running with but I think I was pretty consistent with where I've been throughout the year if not a little bit better.

The result wraps up a strong year for Baerg in which he was the top Heat finisher at every event he competed in. That included a 14th place finish at the Canada West Championships which earned him a Canada West Second Team All-Star selection.
