RECAP: Second straight win for Heat over Mariners

KELOWNA, BC- The UBC Okanagan women's basketball team played the Vancouver Island Mariners on Saturday afternoon at UBC Okanagan to a near identical score as their Friday night game at Immaculata. The Heat won the rematch 75-48 in their home gym.

On Friday night the the final score in the community game was 72-47 in favour of UBC Okanagan. The Heat are now (2-0) to start their 2016-17 campaign.

Freshman post Nicole Hart continued to shine for the Heat, Nicole finished with a game high 20 points. Fifth year guard Emily Kanester was the only other to reach double digits. Kanester finished with 11. Vanessa Botteselle scored nine and Chloe Kennedy finished with eight. All eight of Kennedy's were in the final frame.

The recent Immaculata grad, Nicole Hart scored 14 of her points in the first half, the Heat scored 44 in the first two quarters  and led the visiting team by 14 at the half (44-30). The hosts clamped down on defense in the third allowing just four Mariner points while extending their lead to 23.

Other than Kennedy's hot shooting the fourth quarter saw both coaches try different lineup combinations to test their team out early in the season.

A trip to Calgary and three games in the Calgary Cup is on tap this Thursday through Saturday (Oct. 6-8) for the UBC Okanagan women's basketball team. 

The Cup is a jointly hosted team between Mount Royal and the University of Calgary. The Heat play both host's in their home gym between a game on Friday (3 p.m. PT) against St. Mary's University at U of C. Thursday at Mount Royal (5 p.m. PT) and Saturday versus Calgary (2 p.m. PT).
