RECAP: Heat finish second in Langara Invitational as Apchin captures individual title

Richmond, BC - It was a strong start to the 2018 PacWest golf season for the Heat men's team as they would finish as the runners up at Quilchena Golf and Country Club in the first event of the new season.

Rookie sensation Marcus Apchin would capture the individual title in his first career PacWest appearance thanks to rounds of 71 and 69 on the par-73 layout for a two day total of 140 (-6). The Heat men would finish with a two day total of 592 (+8) which was nine shots back of the UFV Cascades, who captured the time title at 583 (-1).

Kelowna product impresses:

Apchin, who plays out of the Kelowna Golf and Country Club, played nearly flawless golf all weekend as he had just five bogeys in the 36-hole tournament. He would make an eagle on the par-5 14th on day-one after he hit his second shot to a couple of feet on the 495-yard hole, although he had a poor finish to his round Saturday, he regrouped on Sunday capturing the title.

The rookie noted his short-game was the key to victory saying that "My short game saved me all day on Sunday, as it was tough to play well tee-to-green in the rainy and windy conditions. My mindset as the rain and wind picked up was to focus on hitting greens and letting the putter do the work which I was able to do."

Day one recap:

Three rookies would lead the way for the Heat on day one as the afore mentioned Apchin would fire 71 on Saturday and not far behind was fellow rookie Ethan Hunt who came in at 72 (-1). The other two scores that counted on the first day were veterans Oliver Rizun and Nik Federko who each came in at +3. The final member of the Heat travel squad was Naoki Takahashi who finished at +6 after the first round.

Day two recap:

The Heat golfers would have to battle the elements on day two as gusty winds and rain made scoring conditions even tougher. Firing the low round on Sunday was the eventual champion Apchin, who had five birdies and just one lone bogey in a round of 69 (-4). The other Heat golfers would fight through the conditions and finish with a second day total of 297 thanks to a round of 74 from Rizun, 76 from Federko and 78 from Hunt.

Coach's comments:

Reigning PacWest Coach of the Year Cass Hritzuk was extremely impressed the performance of not only Apchin, but the rest of the group. "I was very impressed with the maturity and calmness Marcus and the other first years showed throughout the less than perfect weather conditions. They all showed great maturity which is a very valuable asset in tournament golf".

Up next:

The Heat golf team will have a weekend off before the third tournament of the year which will be in Abbotsford at the Ledgeview Golf and Country Club (Sept. 29-30).
